Starting a thread on updates to Nova (formerly “Potato Wedge”) who I successfully adopted today! I am now the proud parent of two tuxedo fur babies and I am hopeful the transition will be smooth.
I opened the pet gate to just let myself into my own bathroom and NOVA ran out?!??? Of course Cosmo ran and drove her back but what the hell man

Guys Jackson Galaxy has apps open for consultations rn should I try to get one...I don't know if my issue is severe enough but frankly the shelter and Nova's foster parents have been hands off saying "it's your cat now" so I'm like bruh

I know 2 weeks is nothing so I'm trying my best to remain positive but it truly feels like nothing works? I JUST played with Cosmo but he's once again staring at her moon-eyed, and she now flees if he gets close to the gate. We've regressed 2 steps back from one setback. Is it possible to rebuild?

In terms of actual space integration Miss Nova has been doing great. She's brave and willing to explore even though nervous. I just cannot get her/my resident cat to adjust to each other, and every setback makes me so afraid that Nova will only see Cosmo as something to fear.

Rn I've let Nova out into the living room (Cosmo locked away in bedroom) and she went to the toy chest and picked out the pink fuzz ball that Cosmo hates and started rolling around with it 😭

…and everything just came tumbling down. Cosmo broke past the pet gate and chased her under the bed 😞 for the love of god WHY!!! He was so good for an hour!!

Both of my cats are loafing in the same room now…(my only concern is Nova just doesn’t want to come out from her spot - but idk if she would come out even if it was just me)

Oh? Sitting here during our closet access session and Nova did not run from Cosmo at first sight (though she did end up going back to her hiding spot) and I was able to direct his attention away from her. Small progress…

The really good news is that yesterday’s open access I think boosted Nova’s confidence a lot, she doesn’t back away from Cosmo at the gate and even moved forward to sit closer to him. And Cosmo is still interested but not nearly to the degree as before, he walks away pretty easily now

Today we’re going to start a week of “closet access” where Cosmo and Nova can interact in her space for an hr, followed by a week of “open access” where all doors open for an hr so they can roam freely + explore

In every instance of “new” in the last 6 yrs I’ve had him, Cosmo has always been the one to be so excited and energetic and then once he gets enough interactions he gets bored and leaves. I really feel like as long as he gets bored of “access” to Nova then he’ll be good!

Her foster parent is literally like “she’s yours now, you have to experiment” and doesn’t like it when I send a lot of questions so I’m like. Sending qs into the void either way 🙃

Nova gave him a small hiss (she’s still sitting upright with ears forward) and he walked away. Like isn’t this communication what needs to happen…? I wish she felt comfortable to leave the corner but I was thinking like. If she needs to observe Cosmo then maybe small safe space is better…

Trying physical introductions again - except this time we’re just sitting in the closet with Nova and I gave both of them treats. Cosmo is not paying any attention to Nova at all and she’s in her corner observing but no hissing (she’s also blinking??????? No idea why when she’s stressed)

I'm wondering if it would be better to just have the gate down semi-permanently? They do not fight and as mentioned Cosmo backs off after a short bit and I don't know if a scenario where lifting the pet gate = both cats happy and sitting still will happen (or will it)? She needs to get used to him

Attempt 2 of having Cosmo and Nova physically meet - it went slightly better as Cosmo was once again excited but backed off and left her alone to do other things, however she continued to hide even when he had left the room so I ended it. I really don't know what to do.

I just gave Nova a petting session without Churu and she started making biscuits!!! This cat once again brings me to my knees

I’m just thrilled that Nova isn’t so shy/scared that it deters her from exploring. All I have been doing is opening doors. She is coming out on her own accord, no treats needed
