This is a beautiful paper that relates the key idea of kinetic asymmetry, along with the possibility of slip and futile cycling, to understand the performance measures for synthetic molecular machines as well as other non-equilibrium processes coupled to chemical catalysis.
The physics of molecular machinery can be confusing. We developed a plug-and-play interactive tool based on trajectory thermodynamics. The user can now visualise how/why motors move directionally or respond to a force (see video), without knowledge of the physics or maths.

as an exercise it may be worth considering why the bar-hinge model would work fine when powered by light, but would not work when powered by a chemical reaction unless kinetic asymmetry were incorporated into the design.
