Nothing really forces you to level up your skills like having to figure out how to draw things you hand waved away before. Like perspective, backgrounds, objects, poses.

Start right now. If you want to make comics, start making comics absolutely right now. Today, even. Start small, maybe try 1-10 pages to start -- but get those fundamentals rolling. Your art will grow so much while making a comic. There is no "when my art gets better" there's right now. Go. Create.
