Grangemouth shows both the risks and opportunities of industrial transition. Over 400 jobs lost - but the site could become a hub for clean fuels and chemicals.

In this briefing, we outline urgent 'no regrets' actions and the policy changes needed to secure a future for the site and its community.
Prospects for Grangemouth: risks, opportunities and policy options >> Green Alliance briefing
The Grangemouth industrial complex in Scotland has been in the headlines throughout 2025 as its refinery closed and over 400 workers lost their jobs. While some have blamed net zero, the site’s owner was clear: aging infrastructure and uncompetitive operations were the cause.

Wednesday's spending review revealed the government's plans for the trajectory of the economy, and was largely more forgiving for climate and nature than many expected. So, how did it perform against our asks? 🤔🚦

"The government has a serious choice to make: build a clean steel industry, fit for the future, or rely on others for one of the core materials powering our economy."

In light of Parliament's recall, our latest blog by @drcolinchurch.bsky.social breaks down the decision ahead 👉

Watching the Scunthorpe situation drag on is painful, even from a distance. An enduring solution is needed after years of the steel industry, workers & local communities being on a rollercoaster journey of ups and (mostly) downs. But some of the discussion hasn’t stuck to the facts. 1/5

Closing the Grangemouth refinery will be incredibly difficult for workers and the local community.

It’s good that plans are being made to find new uses for the site, but these have started late and without much transparency. Workers and local people should be at the heart of the conversation.

Never mind the runways, here’s how to get green growth in the UK
Westminster, we have a problem. A growth problem. The economy shrank in January and economists are cutting their forecasts for 2025. Sub-par growth means stagnating living standards and less cash f…

Yesterday, the government announced an expansion of the Port of Cromarty Firth, making it the UK's first port able to create floating offshore wind turbines at scale.

Transport emissions are off track.

We need more policy that cuts emissions more quickly to meet our net zero strategy targets. In this context, expanding Heathrow and other airports would be a reckless move.

For a menu of ideas you could do check out our report 👇
Transport is the UK’s greatest contributor to climate change, and roads and aviation are the top polluters. ✈️🚌

Our new analysis shows how we can close the gap in meeting climate targets through more action on transport, while still ensuring growth.

Not a great message to green investors now turning away from the US: "we're not too serious about net zero, we'd sooner have a row about a carbon budget-busting airport expansion that won't happen for years, if ever".

We need a serious (green) growth strategy.
