Two important points. One, the NIH review system is far from perfect, but the work of PIs who submit grants, the reviewers who thoughtfully assess them, and the low paylines means that the funded research is incredibly high quality and lots of great grants do not get funded. 1/

I believe that most of our society values science and scientists. We need to continue to communicate our findings and value to the public and advocate for increased research funding, especially for young investigators->they are the future.

Grants should focus more on the person/people doing the science>>the specific experimental minutae. Flexibility to follow the path the data illuminates>>>milestones and deliverables.

The best part of science for me is when someone in the lab or a former lab member has awesome new data and rushes to share it. everything else pales in comparison.

In chaotic times, it is important to emphasize how much i appreciate my fellow scientists and the science they do. Inspired countless times each day by my colleagues in the field.
