Apply! I’m looking forward to attending and commenting this year.
Please circulate: CFP for Western History Dissertation Workshop. This is an exceptional chance for advanced grad students working on a western history topic to get feedback from leading scholars in the field and to do it in the Arcadian paradise that is the Huntington Library.

Last stage of summer 2024 harvest. Super spicy chile powder and chile flakes for gifts (none of receivers are on BlueSky). It was a productive year!

Given that I just read in my son’s AP textbook about settlers on “virgin lands” just yesterday I’m sadly not surprised.

I can plant a salsa garden from seed, I thought. Thanks to my friends for taking some off my hands. I’m looking to dry and make chile powder out of the 100s left on the plants. 😱

"We focus so much on Trump’s stupidity that we forget how deliberately evil he is. He lied to the public for his own political gain. A research panel concluded the US could’ve avoided 40% of all covid deaths under a different president." -- @ser1897.bsky.social
Trump’s covid response was even worse than you remember
In a sane country, it would disqualify him from ever again holding office.

I'm confused. 1889 Allen&Ginter General Gov't & State Capitol Buildings set of 50 cards, 41 of which are purportedly state capitols. Existence of a Dakota card suggests printing before the Feb 1889 bill which split Dakota in 2 but why are MT & UT on the checklist while ID, WA, &c. aren't? 🗃️

Agreed. I was under my desk observing the difference. Not the rolling or deep ground shifting I’m used to at all. More like when they dynamite nearby. Glad my instincts are still fast though. Childhood of quakes make you go straight into move mode, even in NJ!
Holy shit quakes behave way differently here than in CA. This felt more like air shaking the house for an extended period of time and I barely felt any ground movement.
Looks like a 4.8 earthquake centered in NJ.

Counting myself lucky. My grandma turned 90 today. So grateful to chat and laugh with her on the phone. She shared stories of me as a kid. [She’s the youngest of my grandparents (97 and 100 for the others still living).]

I enjoyed the performances in Oppenheimer and don’t begrudge the Oscars, but once again I want to point out that the movie portrayed NM as a completely empty land with absolutely no one living there before the scientists showed up. This is a disservice to a place that has a rich deep history!
