I like the Chrono Trigger approach where they just say to hell with the fourth wall and have a moment where a little reused monster sprite comes on screen, looks you the player directly in the eye to tell you how to do something, and then you go back to playing the game.
I'm older than you so I can confirm that they came with a little book that had the tutorial in it and you read it on the way home

In Donkey Kong 64, the Giant Spider miniboss can only be fought once. Modifying the game to fight it a second time makes it unceremoniously explode. While this appears to be a glitch, examining the code reveals it was actually deliberately added for the developers' own amusement.
