Wrt lists, there's '1970s recipes that should be revived today' or something (mostly still are), which includes Black Forest Gateau. Reminded me of Stilgoe's tribute to Britain's clear favourite restaurant meal of '72: prawn cocktail, steak'n'chips, and the famous cake.

As might have become evident, I've become slightly addicted to lists of various trivia on msn. But at last, one that's actually interesting and informative!

In one of those lists: 'Brit Food Rules Foreigners Don't Understand' - 'Don't Put Ketchup On A Sunday Roast'. Well, what sort of philistine would? I like ketchup; might put it on chips. But on roast meat with 2 veg?? Surely not! (Not that I'd really expect the gravy boat to be on my plate...)

I try to be polite to phone scammers as most would get a 'proper' job if they could. But I got one today saying I was due payment of govmt. compen for missold car finance. 'I've never had car finance, so you're obviously talking rubbish. Goodbye!'

In a list of Brit foods few Americans try more than once: Marmite. Well if they were to spread it as shown here, it would indeed be inedible. Spread thinly - a mere smear you can see the toast surface through - it's yum. Otherwise, definitely not!

Glancing at list of Brit attractions tourists vote underwhelming: they have to be kept distant from Stonehenge for fear of vandalism; they didn't see Nessie at Loch Ness, which is spectacular and has no entry fee - seriously?? Sorry if Portmeirion is really looking dirty and rundown, though.

A reason few American kitchens have a lecky kettle is that with their low voltage system, it takes too long to boil! Conversely, Americans wonder why no sockets in our bathrooms: it's illegal cuz if something plugged into the mains falls in the bath with you, the 240v shock will probably kill you.

'Forgotten' dishes: mulligatawny soup; Beef Wellington; duck a l'orange; steak/kidney pies or puds; and corned beef. Thankfully, not 'forgotten' by Tesco. I buy at least 1 can of corned beef every shop, albeit we don't eat it with cabbage! Chicken a la king might be what we call chicken supreme:

As for the '12 Forgotten Dishes You’ll Hardly Find On Restaurant Menus Today', I wouldn't know about eateries, but fully half of the items can be bought ready-made from Tesco. No doubt despised by healthy eating nutters for being full of ultra-processed nasties...

Here's one to confuse Americans: go to somebody's house and get offered 'a brew', and you'll be disappointed if you're then looking forward to a beer. Say yes and the next question will likely be 'Tea or coffee?', especially if it's before evening.

In another of those lists of Brit phrases Americans don't 'get': cheeky Nando's. I'm totally a Brit, but have never understood that one. I've never seen a Nando's place anyway, let alone grasped what's supposed to be cheeky about it. Cuz it's dear? Unhealthy? Turns out it's the spontaneity! Ah well.

'20 Nostalgic Dishes From The 1970s We Wish Were Still On The Dinner Table'. Huh? Most of the few I've looked at, I've never heard of; and look so disgusting, I wouldn't 'wish' them on anybody. Guess it's US cuisine? They can keep it!

In the past, news reports would say somebody 'had to' do or not do a certain thing, or even softer, they 'needed to' whatever. Now, well-known figures are constantly 'forced' to do or miss out on something. 'Forced' is much harsher; but obviously, more enticing clickbait...

Wrt Brit fish'n'chips: '...usually served with mushy peas, tartar sauce, and vinegar chips.' Tartare sauce? Not in any chippy I've known. Choice of mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce; and what are 'vinegar chips'? We put salt/vinegar over everything, but never heard of vinegar chips!😆

I'd gathered 'lol' is out of favour as I'd stopped seeing it on Fb. Used to find it useful for showing I was joking, but why would one put it after something not meant to be funny? What's wrong with replying with a thumbs up, though? Good job I've no GenZ contacts, eh!

Phew! Parcel delivered this affie, by a lass in a car, not van. Exile had no problem picking up my meds, which no doubt would all have been available yesterday if the pharmacy wasn't rule-bound to fart about, sending to a hub for some items they have right here. Window cleaner no-show; hope he's OK.

Typically horrible Evri experience today. Delivery failed due to it not expected until 10/11/25, and noisy construction work next door. Evri wanted 'more info' to complete delivery. Dreadful 'live chat' experience yielded only that they'll try again tomorrow. Why did I need to contact them? Bah!

Loving how one of the prisoners released by mistake, has happily turned himself in after only 3 days. Apparently there's a lot to be said for 'all found', and a predictable, routine life.

'Christmas ad/s leave viewers in tears' - get a grip! It's an ad. It's there to sell Christmas stuff - presents, food, whatever; and if it moves you to tears, you're falling for it. Oh OK, I'm just an old cynic.😆😆

Before buying something I haven't tried before, I look at reviews, but often wonder why I bother, as they often vary so much eg. 'lovely, delicious' vs. 'horrible, tasteless slop, don't buy.' People with an axe to grind? Manufacturer employees? Folk just being spiteful for some reason? It's weird...

I guess it's easy for me to be 'holy' about elders hanging up the car keys, as non-driver Able/Exile chose our house location wisely. It's within supermarkets' delivery zone, and an easy walk from food shops, chemists, doctor. Living in a rural backwater would make things much more difficult.

Headline: Seniors Are Being Told Not To Drive—But Should They Listen?
Yes, they need to think about their senses, reaction times, and chances of sudden illness. Some are competent. Many are not, and end up killing or disabling somebody, through their selfish insistence on their independence.

Was looking at a thing about elder stereotypes: [carrying cash] 'may be seen as old-fashioned... in fact it’s practical, reliable, and allows them options when cards aren’t accepted.' What about where CASH isn't accepted? Too many Brit shops etc. are trying to force us to become a cashless society!

Thankfully, the only one I've read at all is #10. It was on a booksheIf where I was housesitting; very popular at the time, so I had a look. It's the only book I remember starting, but giving up on - truly awful.
