Maybe I've been listening to music *as a musician* for too long, but man, I CANNOT understand the psychology of people who make requests at bar gigs. You can plainly see that we do not have a horn section; so why in God's name would you request "Uptown Funk"?

Something else contributing to my restlessness (he said, waiting for the butter to met) is that I set myself an annual goal of writing and recording ten new songs and here it is nearly November and I haven't recorded a single one -- except I wrote an entire film score, twelve cues!

Said it before, I'll say it again: The worst part about making music is dealing with musicians.
I've been very lucky in my choice of bandmates this time around, but it seems like every time I reach out of my immediate circle, it's flakes, tryhards, and creeps all the way down.

Still thinking about this, and about the alleged "stories behind" great songs, and I've got to say: The idea that, say, Jimi Hendrix wrote "The Wind Cries Mary" after a fight with a girlfriend named Mary that ended with him sweeping up broken crockery -- it sounds like horseshit on its face.
Seems like a good idea to establish clear lines of division between who you are in public and who you are when no one else is looking, to me

Stage lights are a great invention because they let me play an entire three-set show with sunglasses on, which I do mostly so that the audience won't notice that my eyes are closed most of the time

Conditioning audiences to assume that songwriting is a diary exercise is also a net negative because listeners start to lose their ability to discern when the narrator is a character

A reminder, while you're making plans for this week...
Saw a band last night, an acoustic Americana trio, guitar, cello, and fiddle. Outdoor venue. Magical atmosphere, perfect sound. And while I loved the music, there was something about the set that I found really off-putting. I thought about it for a while and then I pinpointed it: self-justification.

UPDATE TO UPDATE: Just got off a FB messaging chain with another local artist who *just this morning* confidently posted about an upcoming gig at this venue. They haven't heard a single word from the GM. Christ, what a clownshow.
UPDATE: GM finally got in touch, and it's official -- the place is scaling back its hours, eliminating dinner service and late bar altogether through the fall and winter. Better late that never, I guess.
