For #WorldPolioDay, @asm.org named the University of Pittsburgh a Milestones in Microbiology site to honor Dr. Jonas Salk for developing the world’s first polio vaccine. After use in the early 1950s, it reduced paralytic polio in the U.S. by 96% in only a few years.

This show makes me feel awful yet I keep watching to see what happens. They are all terrible people.
The problem with a show like Black Rabbit on Netflix is that they’re all bad guys. There’s no one I’m rooting for, no one I care about.

Like they are all pieces of sh!t.

My heart is broken for all of my #CDC and #NIH colleagues and friends.

You don’t deserve this.

A discovery doesn't usually happen as a single moment but in 3 phases:
1. Observing the results from experiments & analyses,
2. Realizing the big story when writing up the paper,
3. Understanding what's truly new about the work when presenting to friends, reviewers & audiences.

Two sisters side by side. Sunny spent one night away and is back today with Gizmo. I wonder if Sunny will stay for the night? #bigbeareagles

Sunny fledged the nest today. I can’t seem to share it here. So go find the video. I am legit 😭☠️. Gizmo watching her fly away from the nest…😓

Way too many parallels with my son graduating and heading off to college…

I am thinking a lot today about how heavy things feel in my world of faculty doing scientific research. There's the immediate chaos and panic about our ability to pay people and continue our research. But there's also a deeper grief at watching everything get bulldozed for no reason

Excited to be visiting Tulane and giving a seminar tomorrow. We are all heartbroken and disheartened. But we shall carry on doing good science. 💪🏼

As of today, at least 73 study sections have not met. If they review 50 applications, plus 30 triaged, 10% funding rate = 8 grants per SS.

That's 584 fundable grants on hold. Probably 5000 researchers affected in those teams composed of our best and brightest.

SABOTAGE.
Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

NIH freeze by the numbers, and the conclusion is correct. This is sabotage, and we are quickly reaching a point where even if everything were to open back up today, it would be too late to save many labs.
