A quick re-intro: we are interested in the mechanisms of collective cell behaviour, particularly cell movement. We use fly embryos, quantitative microscopy, image analysis and computer-based modelling. One of the systems where we study collective cell movement is the wound healing response.

Once it became clear that an ICE agent could commit murder in broad daylight with no consequences except the VPOTUS defending him with no heed to the facts and instead vilifying and prosecuting the victim, we opened the door to roving death squads.

But there is no statute of limitations for murder.

From abandoning common sense public health principles to destroying decades-old federal institutions and old alliances to runaway inflation to brazenly shooting US citizens on the streets, is there any action taken by this administration that has actually improved things for average US citizens?

We are not the first people, or the first country, to suffer under a tyrannical government that does not respect our lives, or our rights.

There is a method for how to effectively resist, and eventually topple, such a regime. We can learn from others who came before us.

This is my favorite guide.

Buy Canadian!

Grocers and shopkeepers - we need your help, please stock your shelves with even more Canadian products, and get rid of some of those US products. Switch them with Canadian or anything-but-US products. Every little bit makes a difference. 🍁

No science or nature today. ICE just murdered another person in my home state, an ICU nurse working with vets & now they're trying to frame him for the action . All because ICE is angry & afraid of the 50000 Minnesotans who marched yesterday. If you're not calling Congress you're letting them down

Getting asked about how academics can continue to do science & inspire trainees even in the midst of a continued (escalated) assault on science, reason, truth, & human rights. I don’t have great answers.

I would love to hear from mentors about advice they’re giving to trainees/ colleagues.

Mine are seeing me protest things on campus and nationally --actions speak loudly. I tell folks to take things one day at a time, that we're still doing great science. But I'm not going to pretend things are not hard for all of us and perhaps hardest for young folks. 1/2

Great thread about one of my very favorite cellular structures! Also home to one of our labs favorite proteins, Canoe/Afadin
How can structures at the vertex of 3 cells have effects at the tissue level?

When review panels are forced to make distinctions between a large bolus of grants that are clearly good enough to be funded (but can't be because of gov't underfunding) then strange/arbitrary/stochastic things happen. The solution is more funding for science in Canada. cc @mark-carney.bsky.social

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

This is the key: we could virtually eliminate shootings like these but we don't have the will or the leadership to take even the smallest steps
I encourage people to learn about what happened following the École Polytechnique massacre in Québec to see how much of this history repeating itself is very much preventable.
