Every semester I end up going on a rant in my budgeting class about how using the debt ceiling and government shut downs are the worst possible ways to deal with deficits and government spending. I see now that I need to rant louder.
Republicans are preparing to scrap House Speaker Mike Johnson’s bipartisan plan to avert a government shutdown, as Elon Musk joined conservative rebels to raise concerns about excess spending after Johnson cut a deal with Democrats in a bid to keep the government open.
Under pressure from Elon Musk, House GOP prepares to scrap spending bill
Unless Congress acts, a shutdown deadline looms just past midnight Saturday.

Water Policy = Health Policy

Also, the more polluted our ground water becomes the more expensive it is to clean. This increases the price of water.

The golden age of property tax assessment research is upon us. A new paper finds that assessors smooth property tax revenue by reassessing less aggressively during property value downturns. Also, they under-assess their own homes! www.nber.org/system/files...

Thanks to the Water and Health Advisory Council and the University of Wisconsin for putting together a workshop on the next 50 years of safe drinking water! It’s been fun talking about water financing issues

Public service is a noble calling, but we can't use that as cover for not taking care of public servants
Highly skilled firefighters are the last line of defense against wildfires, but that line is fraying because the government decided long ago that they’re not worth very much.

My fellow Bush School professor, Eric Lewis, is on this paper too. They do some cool stuff with oil and gas drilling contracts. Check it out!

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea you aren’t working on but keep thinking about

1) Does fiscal health affect water utility response to drought?
2) Why climate financial risks priced in some industries but not all?

1) do novel programs reduce env. violations?
2) do utilities raise rates if given federal customer assistance funds ?

Most of the hot-takes on the Department of Government Efficiency are dunking on Elon, the name DOGE, that there are co-chairs, that it's not a real department, etc.

I support all of these; however, let's take a look at the federal budget anyway 🧵

As a UNT Alumni and current professor in Texas this is very sad to see. It really undercuts the reputation UNT has built over the years as an open and welcoming campus. It also sets a dangerous precedent for other public universities in Texas
NEW: The University of North Texas administration "has gone totally rogue," I write for @penamerica.bsky.social, censoring syllabi and research grants even though the state's DEI ban explicitly exempts them. One of the worst cases of overcompliance I've ever seen. pen.org/press-releas...
