The same juvenile Robin, a little under 6 weeks later. A tad scruffy but almost in full adult plumage – and posing on a different solar-powered garden light while supervising the watering of Dad's beloved garden!

There is a little scruffiness to the plumage around the face and neck where the adult plumage has yet to come through fully, but the bird is close to displaying the colours associated with an adult of the species: an orangey-red face, throat and chest with the sides fringed with a grey border, brown feathers on the the rest of the head, the back and the wings, and white feathers on the belly. The eye is black, while the short, slim beak and the legs and feet are blackish-brown. In the background, out of focus, are yellow and pink flowers and green leaves.

Photo of a Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) who has just taken off from the top of a pole. The bird is heading towards the left side of the picture, with wings outstretched and legs dangling. The plumage is mostly white, with greyish areas, but the top of the head is black. The pointed beak is orange with a black tip, and the fairly short legs are also orange. The tail is forked, rather like that of a Swallow, hence the 'hirundo' part of the scientific name for this species, and the alternative, informal common name of Sea Swallow. The pole on which the Tern was perched is set in a lake, the surface of which appears green as it is reflecting the lakeside reeds and other vegetation on the shore.

The Robin is facing towards us and slightly to our left, and is also leaning back and towards our right, with body feathers fluffed out and tail feathers fanned, in order to catch the sun's rays. He or she has a brown, speckled head, and amongst the mostly brownish feathers on their chest are the first few reddish-orange ones. The rest of the plumage on the underside is whitish. We can see little of the back or wings due to the fluffed out body feathers; the undersides of the fanned-out tail feathers meanwhile appear very pale brown. We see the solar panel side-on; it is made of back plastic and has upper and lower sections which are circular in shape with the lower section being smaller. A spider web built on the solar light is picked out by the sun in the bottom left corner of the image, and in the background, out of focus, are green leaves and shadows.

A bonus #BirdOfTheDay pic on the #lunchtime theme. In this case, lunch—in the form of half a dozen or so small fish—will be served to the Puffin’s growing youngster (a Puffling) in a nearby burrow. Photographed on Skomer Island back in June.

An Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) with half a dozen or so small, long fish in his or her beak. The bird is walking from left to right, with its body tilted slightly forwards. The top of the head, the neck, the back, the wings and the tail are black, while the sides of the face, the chest and the belly are white. The beak, which is short, and much taller than it is broad, is a blue-grey colour near the base and red towards the pointed tip, with yellowish lines around the blue part and within the red part. The short legs and the webbed feet are orange. The bird is standing on ground which is sandy and spattered with white droppings, and within which a burrow has been excavated close to where the Puffin is walking (the bird is not walking towards it so presumably is heading for another nesting burrow not far away).

Front view of a European Robin perched on a twig, head cocked to the right side of the picture so that he or she is looking at us with their right eye. The robin's face and chest are an orangey red in colour, with a grey border. The belly and flanks are whitish, with some darker patches. The crown is brown, what little we can see of the wings and the tail are the same colour. The fairly short beak is dark in colour, and legs and feet pinkish.
