Ah, now I’m putting away my ms for 6 weeks and taking refuge in a pure comfort, cosy writing project. This one is 100% for me and my two betas who love the universe (it’s too wacky to ever be traditionally published, so that’s not the aim), and so it exists beyond pressure, goals, progress.

Been struggling with my synopsis for days, and I just sat down and wrote it freehand, and the whole thing flowed out in one take.

Ahh I’ve finished the 4th draft (the easy bit) but now it’s the time for the synopsis and dreaded query letter (the hard bit). I have not missed this part…

Been reducing social media use for mental health reasons, but still doggedly working on my 4th (!) draft. Reached 65/80k. Lots of structural changes, still, but with each one, I feel like I'm getting closer to the final form.

Okay. I've got to stop working on this draft. Every time I open up the document, I shift things around, alter sentences according to feedback, but I'm not sure if it's improving anything. The only way to stop my default habit is to start a new thing.
August 26, 2025 at 2:20 PM
My brain is like *just one more revision* and then I'll leave the draft to rest. Yeah, I think I'm addicted to this thing. 🫤

Alright, flat-out exhausted after finishing my 3rd draft. Banning all temptations to query it this year to teach me patience. 🙏 Already, I have lots of new ideas for tweaking the ms, but maybe I need some distance before I dive in.

Need to remind myself that editing shouldn't involve rewriting every chapter from scratch.
August 11, 2025 at 2:32 PM
Do you edit chronologically? I keep getting stuck on the same chapter/section and fall into a cesspit of procrastination and despair, so I'm going to throw caution to the wind and whenever I get stuck, move to a new section. Be more of a butterfly instead of an ant.

Ahahaha, struck by a lightning idea to change one of the core concepts of my novel that permeates every page...🙈
July 14, 2025 at 8:49 AM
Gah, of course when I send a sample of my work to a beta, I experience a sense of dread so deep and heavy, I'm unable to focus on returning to my draft.

One thing that worries me about AI in creative works is that it will eventually shape consumers' tastes to such a degree that people will no longer be able to think outside of non-AI cadences or structures, and that individual voice will be considered a flaw.
Older technologies have aided and perhaps enfeebled writers. “But with A.I. we’re so thoroughly able to outsource our thinking that it makes us more average, too,” @chaykak.bsky.social writes.

Starting a new accountability thread for my third draft. I'm aiming for five drafts in total. Today I'm at 9/80k.
July 7, 2025 at 3:50 PM
Finished my second draft at 75k. A little short of my 80k goal, but that leaves me with the right amount of flexibility for my next draft. Usually I aim to do four drafts, but this one needs at least five. But the shape's there. I just need one more pass before I can send it to betas.

Reading my dystopian book, while watching dystopian TV, writing my dystopian novel, while absorbing and being paralysed by the incessantly unfolding dystopian present.

Would you like to read the most harrowing, angry story I ever wrote? (and possibly will ever write)

Yes? Okay, well... You were warned.

Ending the week on 36k/80k. Going to take off any pressure to finish this quickly and drop the goal to query it this year. It's a strange work that needs the space and time for each line to simmer and bite.

Back from a gorgeous, luscious holiday and now ready to hit the keyboard. 31k/80k on my second draft. Whoooo!
June 2, 2025 at 8:09 PM
Making veeerry slow progress, so I've only increased by word count by 5k (23k/80k) over the past couple of weeks. I'm writing whole new sections and massively cutting passages, so it's like hacking through a thicket. Slow progress is still progress. 💪
18k/80k words into my second draft. The second draft is always the most difficult, the gnarliest, but I’ve committed to it now, and I have to finish this mad thing.

Oh yes, after a very dormant period, I'm (very) slowly beginning to query my YA horror again...🤞🏽
April 14, 2025 at 8:12 PM
Can I still technically be querying if I haven't sent a new query in over 3 months? 😅
April 2, 2025 at 1:28 PM
Didn't manage to get much writing done last week because of sick kids/lack of childcare but now I'm baaack. Time to get some words down. 💪🏽

Outline traced. 20 chapters in total. Time to dive in. This will be my accountability post for my first draft. 60k/80k
