🌊🐢Researching sea turtle ecology to inform conservation

New paper out! 🌊🐢 OA 🙌🏻
We reviewed studies tracking male sea turtles, revealing key behaviors—some unique to males! We highlight knowledge gaps and set priorities to guide future research on this overlooked half of the population. #spatial ecology #biologging #seaturtles

Overexploited for their beautiful and malleable shells, hawksbills suffered major declines.

They are very rare in West Africa, with a small population nesting in Guinea-Bissau.

We saw 5 this August, including our oldest record, nesting since 2007! 🤩🤩

A fun review we did on the spatial ecology of male sea turtles. Male sea turtles don't come ashore to lay eggs, making them harder to track and therefore more 'elusive'. Check it out!

So happy to be able to study green turtles at Prampram, Ghana! Very small juveniles forage along the shoreline, and John (in green) will use genetics to find which population they come from 🌊🐢🧬🤩

Magical to see so many grey reef sharks in a healthy reef in the Maldives 🤩🌊❤️🦈

sharks are vital for healthy reefs and to keep fish populations balanced, but shark fin trade is a major threat ! #sharks #healthyreefs

Beautiful article by @FrancescoVentura on Poilão Island, where record-breaking numbers of green turtles nest, conservation meets culture, and nature’s magic unfolds under the moonlight. 🐢✨ #SeaTurtles #Bijagós

Poilão Island is truly magic 🤩 the sacred status of this island among the Bijagos people contributed to the conservation of one of the largest green #seaturtle populations globally
Our Bijagos friends are also magic 🤩❤️
