Bando Tsumasaburo, aka Bantsuma, died in 1953 aged just 51. His career as an actor and producer/studio head tracked the survival of Japanese cinema through the upheavals of the pre-war and wartime era, name changes, mergers, dissolutions and foreign deals.

Film-making at TOEI Kyoto Studio Park, formerly Toei Uzumasa Studio, dates back to 1926 when actor Bando Tsumasaburo founded his own studio there and formed a distribution partnership with America's Universal Pictures. It could be considered the spiritual home of chambara and jidaigeki.
