I had one of the weirder moments in a weird life last night when I realised that the Black Mirror episode Playthings was inspired by Creatures, a game I worked on in the 90s. Charlie Brooker reviewed it at the time, and apparently it stuck in his head.

I've had a stubbornly high ANR rate of about 0.7% in my recent games. Google have a "bad behaviour" threshold of 0.5% over which they will reduce the visibility of your app on the store. So I've done a test, I removed the Facebook ads SDK from the game, now the ANR rate is 0.26%, a nearly 70% drop!

OMG it's full of jargon
Making games for mobile phones is a bit different to creating them for other platforms. For PC and console games your player will usually be buying your game before they download it. In the world of.....

When learning to code, or even learning a new language, make your projects as tightly scoped as possible. A single screen game with basic dynamics that you finish will teach you far, far more than making a small part of a larger game that you may never finish.

One of the earlier games I created in my game development journey. This is the header sheet for a printout of a BASIC game that I inventively called ADVENT (short for adventure, we only had eight characters for file names.) This simple text based game was written on my college's VAX minicomputer.

I've used the LibGDX game framework for all my Android games but I'm now trialing moving to Godot for future games. So far it doesn't seem that it will save me much coding time, although that may come with experience. The main thing that attracts me is better potential for future collaborations.

2000 individually tagged video clips are now available on the Game UI Database! Remember, you can scrub through each one frame-by-frame to break down animations and learn from the pros.
The newly uploaded Astro Bot has some particularly great transitions 👌
