The US is about to lose its large-facility source GHG database (EPA's GHGRP) which the Trump administration is shutting down.
People tracking GHGs internationally think it's bad, but fundamentally they aren't that affected because the future action / change isn't happening in the US anyways.

49 members of the Thousand Madleens freedom flotilla remain in Israeli custody for trying to deliver much-needed aid to starving people in Gaza. Whatever Trump says about a "ceasefire," the lives and liberation of Palestinians still depend on international solidarity.

There have been many attempts to save data that Trump's admin is taking down. But these don't help the core problem, which is that governmental databases are useful because they keep getting updated. If not, they become historical data.

I'm sure this isn't a novel insight but everything happening with tech platforms must, to some degree, be driven by their managers and developers actively hating their users and rueing that they have any autonomy as human beings other than being manipulable data points for behavioral experimentation

When I try to get 2023 ACS data (or really any other recent data) from the US Census web site I get:

Universities are not educational institutions. They're neoliberal entities that operate like corporations. Their goal isn't to enlighten or protect free speech, but to indoctrinate and produce competent systems managers. This has been a global phenomenon spearheaded by the US and Wall Street.
"Why would it bow to antidemocratic pressures by placing a professor on leave without their request, consent, or involvement? That any university would do this is beyond comprehension and is cause for alarm about the future of academic freedom in Canada."

This is not a joke. This is not normal.

I finally got it together to put a message on my site with pictures of a thousand #losangeles #mural s that I'd donated the permanent records of the collection to Cal State Fullerton. Feels like the end stage for this project.

Bill McKibben's latest #climate newsletter, since it has to be somewhat reality based, is now just all about China. Unfortunately it still has some kind of dreamscape embedded it about philanthropy and well-meaning Westerners buying people free solar panels.

A general phenomenon to watch out for is that #renewable power is going to decrease overall volume of trade everywhere -- very approximately half of shipping is carrying fossil fuels around. Look for economists to write many think pieces about how #climate measures destroy trade.
Solar panel imports will reduce OVERALL imports - because the value of diesel imports eclipses the value of solar panel impors.
A solar panel in Nigeria now costs just $60, and can repay the cost of diesel for a generator within 6 months - and even less in other countries.

Since this is Smaugust I might as well mention that I looked for something by Adam Roberts @adamroberts.bsky.social that I hadn't read and decided to pick up _The Dragon with the Girl Tattoo_, one of his since-ceased humorous satires of popular books. It was pretty good

tl/dr for US #EPA data-related products: anything that runs more or less continuously is still running on autopilot. Anything that has a once per year release has not been released.

I started on a #climate #GHG project using US GHGRP, Inventory data in Feb 2025. Dropped it due to pressure of other work, restarted it now. Grimly expected I'd be back to square 1. Nope! Nothing new has been released since then.
The US Inventory was supposed to be final-released April 15.
