Firstly, lets completely define what "catfishing" really is? According to Proofpoint catfishing is a method of romance fraud. It's impersonating someone on dating cites or social media to draw in prospects!

Thus, I believe the phrase "on the internet no one knows you are a dog" directly implies creating an entire identity for yourself online separate from IRL identity. Online you can show a completely different side of you and no one would know your "true" IRL self.

Another Article from Distilled goes in depth of how the phrase "On the internet no one knows you are a dog" helps us identify online identity. On the internet you can make it so you have a cloak of invisibility. Posting whatever you choose about yourself you are able to re-identify yourself.

According to Smithsonian magazine the phrase was first introduced in 1933 in a cartoon about two dogs sitting at the computer. Though back then the phrase did not have much meaning it heavily foreshadowed how social media would change the social world for humans forever.
