Also keep in mind that the standard AAA game is a sandbox in which the industry standard is to enable the player to tackle the quests in whichever order they choose to the greatest extent possible.
That is the absolute death of narrative continuity, and with it, good dialogue.

An under-discussed aspect of the State of Games Narrative is that a lot of AAA game dialog has a stilted, disjoint sort of feel to it because it was *structured* by a narrative designer/scripter first, and then a writer took a pass to write the actual lines without being able to rearrange anything.
