When those who seek to speak and lead within the disability community are silent when the community is actually harmed, one must wonder to what disability community is the person actually trying to lead and, if, they really know the community at all.

When people in power and those with privilege use offensive language and slurs regarding the disability community, it sadly frees everyone to feel they can use the same slurs without “hurting anyone.”

Those who are hurt are those who are too often ignored, isolated, and shamed by society.

I celebrate that the United Methodist Church approved language to no longer allow discrimination against people with disabilities in the church. It is a good first step, but laws do not change hearts. We need honest efforts of listening and giving leadership voice to people with disabilities.
