When those who seek to speak and lead within the disability community are silent when the community is actually harmed, one must wonder to what disability community is the person actually trying to lead and, if, they really know the community at all.

When people in power and those with privilege use offensive language and slurs regarding the disability community, it sadly frees everyone to feel they can use the same slurs without “hurting anyone.”
Those who are hurt are those who are too often ignored, isolated, and shamed by society.

Thanksgiving is not always an easy or joyous holiday for many people. For those who grieve or find today difficult for any reason, I feel your pain and am right there with you.

I celebrate that the United Methodist Church approved language to no longer allow discrimination against people with disabilities in the church. It is a good first step, but laws do not change hearts. We need honest efforts of listening and giving leadership voice to people with disabilities.

What you do to the least of these, what you say about those you disagree with, what you believe about people whose lives are not like your own says more about your faith in Jesus than any Scripture you can quote.

If members of Congress were forced to sit together in a room, with one TV only playing the 2025 WVU Football Team, and they were not allowed to leave or turn the TV off until they agreed on a plan to reopen the government, the government would be back open by the end of the first quarter.

Most government welfare in the US goes to corporations and the rich and not the poor and needy. Remember that as benefits for the poor, disabled, and needy are cut.

I serve portions of the northern panhandle of WV. In the two counties my churches reach people, there are 11,695 households that receive SNAP benefits. That doesn’t take into account the number of people who qualify but do not recieve those benefits.

In no place, nor any conversation, nor any aspect of life should anyone feel the need to make jokes related to Hitler, gas chambers, abusing people someone disagrees with, mocking people with disabilities, someone’s skin color, or nationality.

Disability rights and laws are routinely being attacked and dismantled. What we do to the least of these shows how we truly view people.

As a pastor and disability advocate, I woke up discouraged but hopeful knowing that we are not alone in the struggle for acceptance and inclusion.
