Tomorrow's sermon--Jerry McGuire, the Boswell Papers, and the Apostle Paul.
Sermon: Complete Love (Sermon 3 of 4 on 1 Corinthians 13)
We’ll begin this morning with two brief suggestions of what it is to be “complete,” one explicitly about love and the other, not.  We’ll start with the one about love.   It’s from th…

I'm totally giving this a whirl.
Great finds! But... a 198 page speech? 😲

Pastors and professors, anyone want to give something that long a try with your congregation or class and report back on how it goes?
The @congrelib.bsky.social launched a project to inventory all of print holdings starting in January. Lots of discoveries, like William Everett’s manuscript historical address for the 300th anniversary of Puritan poet John Milton’s birth. At 198 pages long, attendees were in for a heck of a talk!!

Redeem the season! Tune in with everyone you love!
Don’t finalize your Valentine’s/Galentines’ week plans without registering for our 2025 Cotton Mather Lecture on Feb. 12 at 1 pm EST. Dr. Alea Henle (@armlh.bsky.social) will be discussing Cotton’s granddaughter Hannah Mather Crocker, an 18th century advocate for women’s intellectual equality.
Please join us on February 12th at 1 pm EST for our 3rd annual Cotton Mather Lecture.

Dr. Alea Henle (@armlh.bsky.social) will be speaking about Hannah Mather Crocker’s life in the shadow of her family legacy and work to establish her own identity as an advocate for women’s intellectual equality.

Sermon: Closed to God? (Luke 4:14-30)
Back in the early 90s, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward did a movie together that I’ve always liked, called “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge.”  They played an old married couple, which, of course, they wer…

According to the Preface, Ussher's Of the Power of the Prince was not published in his lifetime is that the good archbishop set the manuscript down on his desk with his other papers and could never find it again as long as he lived.

Relatable.

Amazing animation. But also note the relative proportions of people shipped as slaves to the Caribbean and Brazil, compared to North America, which was a great surprise to me.

In "You Can't Make It Up," last night was also SantaCon in NYC. It's not as awful as it probably sounds: it's worse.

In what was maybe the most un-Congregationalist thing I have ever done, I attended the veneration of the relics of St. Thomas Aquinas in NYC last night (they were visiting from Toulouse). What was that? Not sure. But I know the Angelic Doctor's words have been powerful for me over the years.

In the category of "Diane Keaton Christmas Movies," I think I liked "Love the Coopers" more than "The Family Stone." I invite your opinion.

Sermon: Christmas as Close Encounter (Luke 21; Jeremiah 33)
Have you started receiving Christmas cards yet?  We got the first ones yesterday, unless you count that tire shop in Riverside.  We got theirs just after Halloween.   If yo…
