My little retro computer world... Several weeks of work to design 80 isometric computers from the 1980s and comment on their key specs.
If you'd like to see (and hear about) them, here's the link youtu.be/wQPmPdL5t3Y
For the first post of 2026, let's put together the once antagonist, now reconciled brothers, the 16-bit stars of the 80s, the Atari 520 ST and Amiga 500.

Photo shot in my studio.
Authentic setups, CRT scanlines, ball mouse and wild joystick: that's Retro Dream.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Folks!
You were 1,500 to join me this past year: thank you for your interest in my retro-photo work!
Let 2026 bring us even more beautiful Retro Dreams!
See you around,
Anton

A rare take, but I’ll stand by it: Loom is even more beautiful in EGA than in VGA.
The limited palette used with dithering effects gives it a softer, more painterly mood. Truly beautiful game and pure storybook magic.

Another part of my studio. I love retro setups, CRT scanlines, genuine hardware, floppy disks, ball mouse and wild joystick.
I made this isometric timeline of micro computers from the 1980s.
If you spot machines I forgot to mention, just tell me! youtu.be/wQPmPdL5t3Y

The Hobbit on my Apple IIe.
The screen quality of these 45 year old CRTs is absolutely amazing.
I felt the need to pay them tribute:

Look at this black beauty.
This is the Toshiba HX-21 "Pasopia" MSX system, Japanese version powered by a Z80 with 64K of RAM.

Its keyboard has a very soft and nice feel. It has another cartridge slot on the rear.

This is not a commercial for IBM, this is one of my setups: PS/2 Model 30.

Photo shot in my studio. Retro setups, CRT scanlines, genuine hardware, floppy disks, ball mouse and wild joystick.

That's the Retro Dream experience.

I played Prince of Persia on pretty much every machine save the one Jordan Mechner initially developed it for: the Apple II.
Just fixed that!
Trying it at last on my 40 year old Apple IIe, and sharing the moment with you. Legendary game on legendary machine

Eye of the Beholder on IBM PS/1 Model 2011. Both game and machine from 1991: a very good vintage year...

Photo shot in my studio. Retro setups, CRT scanlines, genuine hardware, floppy disks, ball mouse and wild joystick.

That's the Retro Dream experience.

Part of my studio.
Real stuff nostalgia: CRT scanlines, genuine hardware, loading from floppies, using ball mouse and wild joystick!
Re-creating the same gaming conditions as back then. That's my philosophy.

Lemmings was first released for the Amiga, Atari ST and DOS PC.
Porting it to 8-bit machines such as C64 and Amstrad CPC was a technical challenge. In this video you'll see how each of these five machines handled it.

What a beautiful, intelligent and funny game... Monkey Island, seen here on my Atari ST, a no less beautiful machine.

This is a shot I made a minute ago playing R-Type on my Amiga. Look closer at these pixels and see the difference between a shot from a genuine CRT display vs what you could get from emulation on LCD.

Arkanoid running on Amstrad CPC. Legendary game on legendary machine.
Here's how I set it up and why I think CRT has something more than LCD when it comes to Vintage Gaming: youtu.be/fVsATm_NtWE

Here's the result of my 6 months work on isometric vintage computer design and data gathering.
The result is a visual Timeline of Micro Computer History along with main characteristics and production figures.

Look at those beautiful pixels from the CRT display of my Amstrad CPC running Prince of Persia...
Yes, recent emulators can render CRT-like pictures. But in my opinion nothing can replace real vintage hardware for its nostalgic load.
Perfect copies of a painting remain copies.

Defender of the Crown: magnificent intro graphics and awesome music.

It just looks gorgeous on the sleek Atari ST. So much more than on some modern emulation...

Marble Madness, a great classic, running here on the breadbin C64.

Photo shot in my studio.
Real stuff not emulation: CRT scanlines, genuine hardware, loading from floppies, using crude joystick!
Re-creating the same gaming conditions as back then. That's my philosophy.

Amstrad CPC version of Barbarian.
The fight is over and the lizard drags away your opponent.

Real stuff not emulation: CRT scanlines, same gaming conditions as back then.
That's my philosophy at Retro Dream

This is how I used to play Dungeon Master back in the day: on the Atari ST, in the dark, oppressive silence... Jumping on my seat hearing the roar of a monster attacking from behind!

Photo shot from my studio.
CRT scanlines only, no emulation, that's my philosophy.

Compare this post with my previous one: many similitudes between this C64 model C released in 1986 and the Amiga 500 released in 1987, both running Arkanoid also released at the same time. Level 5 is a wink to Space Invaders... which was already retro by this time! Pure Nostalgia
