Let’s Go X!
Crosstown Shootout

What a bummer of a result. But very encouraging performance. Let’s see if we can carry that over to Sunday against West Virginia.

Xavier had four players score 20+ points tonight. Wonder if that’s ever happened before.
November 19, 2025 at 2:29 AM
I’m not sure how to handle this. Xavier has not been flat out just a bad bad team in almost 45 years. The not so good to bad teams of late have all either been fairly competitive or had pretty extenuating circumstances that resulted in them being bad.
November 15, 2025 at 2:42 AM
That was awful to watch. Completely uncompetitive from the jump against Santa Clara.

Alright I was able to go to the exhibition game today. X might struggle offensively this year. Not a lot of guys that can create their own offense and good looks for others and the outside shooting or lack thereof is troublesome. If this game was in Dec X probably wins, execution was very sloppy.

1. Definitely a bit surprised Mack was turned down. I would’ve been fine with him but not crestfallen or anything.

2. I probably would’ve chosen someone else over Pitino, but I definitely don’t hate it

3. Most excited for a fresh start and new principles, namely no more packline!

Xavier is in such a weird spot. Feels kind of crazy to bring back another former coach immediately after the last guy just totally burned you. But also feels a little nuts not to bring back someone with as much success as Mack.

Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.
March 23, 2025 at 6:42 PM
That was awesome. Going to be thinking about that Xavier comeback and crowd for a long time, no matter how this season ends.

As called by Joe Sunderman & Byron Larkin on Xavier radio & heard on the Varsity app:

The selection committee makes a few baffling decisions every year w/both selections and seeding. And they don’t have to answer for it. They do these interviews where they talk a lot without actually saying anything and don’t explain it and we just move on and forget about it because the games start.

With Memphis, VCU, UC San Diego, Boise State as AQ’s I would have it right now:

Last Four Byes Avoiding Dayton
Oklahoma
West Virginia
Baylor
Arkansas

Last Four In
San Diego State
Vanderbilt
Xavier
North Carolina

First Four Out
Indiana
Colorado State
Texas
UC Irvine

Just wait until the media gets word that Travis Steele and John Groce are half-brothers and playing each other for the MAC Championship tomorrow night. They’ll eat that up.

Gonna be a long 73 hours

Probably the most likely conference for a bid thief.

Also, has any school fallen off harder than Temple? Perennial NCAA Tournament team from 1984-2001, missing just once. Went six years in a row from 2008-2013. Have been just twice since, last in 2019, haven’t even made the NIT since then.

The AAC starts Wednesday at the Super Pit in Denton (then moves to Dickies Arena in Fort Worth). Fun facts:
- Bid thief potential: Moderate
- North Texas is one of 7 teams to not lose a game by more than 7 points this season
- 10th is the AAC's worst ranking in its history

Bid thieves are my biggest worry with Xavier getting squeezed, not other bubble teams passing them up. I don’t see the case for Boise or Colorado State as an at-large. Neither are top 50 in any of the three resume metrics. MWC is one to watch for bid thief potential.

The Mountain West starts Wednesday from the Thomas & Mack Center. Fun facts:
- America peaked on 11-17-1990 when UNLV humiliated Team USSR in this building, leading at one point 93-55, causing the breakup of the Soviet Union.
- Air Force is 4-26 all-time in this event
- Wyoming will win it

After the demoralizing home loss to St. John’s, Xavier is 10-3 and 23rd on Torvik in that timeframe (O: 44, D: 17)

Since the loss to Nova on Super Bowl Sunday, Xavier is 5-0 and 14th on Torvik in that timeframe (O: 29, D: 14)

Musketeers. Need this one.

Two bubble watch thoughts

1. On Creighton/UConn/@Butler becoming Q1. To me there is no functional difference between a team ranked 29 vs 30 vs 31 vs 32 (or 74/75/76/77). Have to set cutoff somewhere but there should be nuance to looking at the Quad records. I would hope the committee can do that.

Something about O’Connell at MSG with Xavier games. Good lord.
