Proudly serving the people of New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. Proud #BlackWoman. Congressional Progressive Caucus Member. Co-Chair & Co-Founder of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women & Girls. She/her.
This February, let’s celebrate our identity and culture; the strides made to build this nation and improve our society; and those who continue to push forward despite the challenges we face every day.

Americans are spending more money than ever on food, housing, and childcare. The result is more Americans living in poverty, but this doesn’t have to be our reality.

As Chair of the Democratic Caucus Task Force on Poverty, I’m committed to finding solutions to end poverty once and for all.

I've known Ilhan Omar for 8 years. She is a fierce advocate for her constituents and for working people everywhere.

No one should endure the constant threats she receives for her advocacy and for what she represents and she is one of the toughest women I know.

Cowards won't make her cower.

Donald Trump and GOP leadership are causing 15 million Americans to literally pay the price to cover tax breaks for billionaires — but claim to care about families and the working class.

Last week, I joined the @ppfa.org President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson to reflect on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

As a grandmother, this is very personal to me. Reproductive care is health care and health care access is a human right.

This #NationalPovertyAwarenessMonth, I want to remind my colleagues that, in the wealthiest country in the world, we DO have the means and the obligation to fight to establish a floor beneath which no person, no family, no child can fall.

I voted NO on the DHS funding bill.

ICE made meeting arbitrary quotas & filling detention hall beds its priorities over the safety and civil rights of law-abiding residents.

Until real reforms are made that respect the safety & security of our communities, I cannot vote to provide further funding.

America ranks 55th globally for maternal mortality, and last among wealthy nations, despite global declines.

It is simply unconscionable that in the wealthiest country in the world, we do not fundamentally guarantee reproductive healthcare.

I have 27,000 constituents who will lose their heath care because of the Big, Ugly Bill. I don’t need Republicans to continue pushing their lies about why we are in this health care crisis.

On #MLKDay2026, I’m reflecting on this quote:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

These words ring true in this nation today just as it did in 1963. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to treating our neighbors with respect and fighting for justice for all.

ICE took two Princeton residents into custody, including a father of 4 after dropping off his son at school. The failed practices of ICE have led not to community safety but to the breaking up of families. The pretense that their mission is to deport dangerous criminals has been shown to be a lie.

Happy Founders Day to all of my sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.! It’s a joy standing with my sorors in Congress as we fight to make the world a better place for all. We’ve always been called to leadership, & it’s needed now more than ever to materialize the bright future that lies ahead.

This week, I stood with Democrats to introduce Articles of Impeachment against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

Her malicious and incompetent leadership has led to chaos across the nation. Americans did not ask for this. Democrats will not stand for it.

From day one, the Trump administration and Congressional GOP leadership pledged to lower prices to make life better for Americans. Instead, grocery costs have skyrocketed, health care premiums have soared, and affordable housing is more inaccessible than ever.

Secretary Kristi Noem’s malicious and incompetent leadership has led to chaos across the nation— with people disappearing off the streets, families torn apart, and innocents killed in the process.

Today, Democrats are moving forward to impeach her.

I’m forever inspired by Gabby’s courageous tenacity— from her return to Congress just months after the attack to the 15 years of advocacy that ensued to prevent the loss of more lives to senseless gun violence. It’s an honor to be in this fight with her.
Today marks 15 years since a gunman tried to assassinate me. He shot 19 people and killed six.

I almost died, and think of those who did every day.

For months, we’ve fought to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits. We know that without them millions of women and families will go uninsured and have to make impossible choices.

Today, we have a final chance to save them.

Republicans must join us. This is a matter of life and death.

The Trump Administration’s actions in Venezuela are a danger to American interests, the safety of Venezuelans and our own democracy.

Americans want the President to focus on bringing costs down, especially for health care — not attacking other nations to enrich oil executives.

Life in America is already too expensive. On January 1st, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans made things worse by ending ACA tax credits and raising premiums for millions.

Today, Democrats (and a few Republicans) will vote to extend the tax credits. I hope my NJ GOP colleagues will join us.

Secretary Kennedy continues to rely on conspiracy theories and medical quackery at the behest of Trump’s political base instead of trusting decades of proven science by the actual experts.
I’m proud to lead 115 of my colleagues in urging him to uphold his oath to protect children's health by restoring the childhood vaccine schedule.

ICE has been terrorizing peaceful communities for months, routinely escalating situations and making people feel unsafe in their neighborhoods.

And now a woman is dead.

DHS has been reckless in their hiring, training, & execution. Sec Noem should resign & apologize to those harmed by her actions.

The attack on the United States Capitol on #January6th left hundreds of officers injured and caused the death of Officer Brian Sicknick. Yet, on his first day back in office, Donald Trump disgracefully pardoned more than 1,500 of those same violent insurrectionists.
January 7, 2026 at 3:39 AM
Today, I stood with Members of Congress and the families of members of law enforcement who sacrificed their lives to defend the Capitol on #January6th. We cannot let Trump and his allies rewrite the history of one of the darkest moments in the 250-year history of this nation.

From town halls to late night vote series, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together for the 12th District in 2025— but there’s still much work left to do.

Even though 2026 is my final year in Congress, my commitment to our community continues to grow.
