Rangelands are the most common land cover on the planet, yet are often misunderstood.

Powerful stories and ‘myths’ have long shaped how rangelands and pastoralists are seen and often misjudged.

In 2026, we'll be exploring ways of seeing differently.

What is nature? Some see nature as a set of 'stocks of resources' to be exchanged and traded. But there are many more complex ways of valuing nature.

Frank Matose spoke at our online event on rangelands & the myth of 'Tragedy of the Commons'.

A fascinating new project that IDS is involved in: researching effective stewardship of rangelands - the most extensive land cover type on the planet - and the use of 'nature-based solutions' to achieve social, economic and ecological outcomes in Southern Africa
I’m delighted to share this project that looks critically and carefully at ‘nature based solutions’ in context of South African rangelands & grasslands, aiming to share lessons for neighbouring countries too.
Across Southern Africa, rangelands support a large amount of small-scale, communal livestock farming.

What are the possibilities for context-sensitive and community-led approaches for stewardship of these rangelands? And what are the challenges?
