We still don't know what the Congressional budget proposal will be. Trump's shittastic budget proposal is not the final word!
NASA Goddard is pushing through a 48% staff reduction!!! This could impact the upcoming Roman Space Telescope and many other future Astro missions. News coverage seems not sensational enough. Are we really going to let NASA (as we know it) die quietly? www.space.com/space-explor...

Trump proposes unprecedented budget cuts to US science
Huge reductions, if enacted, could have ‘catastrophic’ effects on US competitiveness and the scientific pipeline, critics say.

Sarah’s rules of looking for life with only chemical signatures:

1) the smaller the molecule(s) the more likely they can also be produced by abiotic processes

2) one molecule, if it can be produced by any abiotic process, will never be enough to definitively claim detection of life

First the rumour was a 20% budget cut. Then, 50%. Now the president's NASA budget is out and it's a 68% cut to astrophysics ($1.5B to $487M).

Even if this gets reversed in four years, we will *never* recover the missions, partners, people who will be gone.

Massive cuts to NASA science proposed in early White House budget plan
The preliminary version of President Donald Trump’s budget proposal to Congress, known as a “passback,” would cut the agency’s science budget funding nearly in half.

Please hit the Moon 🌑💥 #2024YR4!
This would be very exciting from a science point of view 🧪🔭🛰️🚀⚒️
We could observe the impact plume from Earth, and perhaps also from orbit. If we manage to put a seismometer on the lunar surface we could learn a much about the Moon's interior.
Discussion of the lunar impact risk corridor for #2024YR4 in 2032: groups.io/g/mpml/topic... .

3 to 4% chance of lunar impact, with a few tenths of a percent on the far side and the rest on the near side.

But almost all on the day side.

OK, I'll be honest. I'm hoping for a hit on the Moon! With high certainty early on, so that we can put together an observation mission and perhaps even a few landed seismometers on the lunar surface. We would learn so much about the physics of crater formation, the lunar surface, and interior! 🚀🌕🔭📡🧪
☄️ 🔭 The impact probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 has dropped from 2.8% to 0.16%.

Thanks to new observations, Earth is now at the edge of our shrinking ‘uncertainty window.’

If this trend continues, the risk may soon reach 0%.
