2025 saw the launch of the Young Naturalists Club at Bolton Museum and this week we held the final session of the year. Over 6 sessions since February we have had 649 attendees and have learnt about everything from birds to botany, and from spiders to….

Found this amazing 🍄 today! 20cm across, 21cm tall - wow! It must be protected at all costs. (Just by accident wearing the most appropriate shirt!)

⚠️ A friendly reminder ⚠️ please share!
Fake spider webs can pose a real danger to autumn wildlife that can become trapped and unable to break free.
Help wildlife this Halloween by making sure your celebrations don't become frightful for nature.

Had a really great weekend this week, especially being out searching for and recording fungi yesterday. 🍄🍄‍🟫

Following on from my post yesterday: here is the fox seen in 1991, in comparison with a fox seen in my mum’s back garden in January 2024. Have you spotted a fox recently? Let me know… FoxesBolton@hotmail.com

Going through the natural history archive at Bolton Museum today, I came across this snapshot of a fox spotted in 1991. I’m keen to start recording at the museum again to ensure an accurate understanding of our local flora and fauna; the data we already have collected is invaluable!

Oh my god. Yesterday I went to see bat-eared foxes in person for the first time, and I don’t think I can ever get over it. 🦊

Really enjoyed showing students from Sixth Form Bolton a selection of objects from the botany collection here at Bolton Museum today. They were using them as inspiration, and to explore observational drawing - a great use of the natural history collections!

What a privilege it is to a) get to work with these amazing animals, and b) get to share them, and the rest of the natural history collection at Bolton Library & Museum Services, with our visitors… a real privilege every day. Join us tomorrow if you like foxes too / as much as I do! 🦊

A great first day back at work after a holiday, with research requests coming in… it seems owls are the bird of the moment with our barn and tawny owls currently getting involved with very interesting studies. (A day late for this #TaxidermyTuesday!)

#TaxidermyTuesday - late as always! But it’s been a busy week of talking about birds, and Young Naturalist Clubs. At the start of the week (well, Saturday) I enjoyed a day in the Nature Gallery talking to visitors about corvids and how we identify the different crows... with help from this raven!

A great day today at Smithills Hall for a nature walk - lots of leaves identified and lots of insects spotted. And the perfect weather again, very lucky! 🌿🐞🪰☀️

For #TaxidermyTuesday today, a closer look at this barn owl. Did you know, barn owls have a specialised serrated edge on the underside of their middle toe! Possibly a grooming adaptation, acting basically like a comb.🦉
