On this day in 1989, R.E.M. played the Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. The concert was filmed for Tourfilm. Most of the footage (and all of the audio) in the release came from this show.
On this day in 1984, R.E.M. played the Concert Garden at Yokohama City University in Tokyo, Japan. ‘Auctioneer (Another Engine)’ was performed live for the first known time.

On this day in 1992, ‘Man on the Moon’ was released in the U.S. as the second single off Automatic for the People, with ‘New Orleans Instrumental No.2’ as the B-side on both the 7” and CD versions.
On this day 40 years ago, Fables of the Reconstruction was voted Album of the Year at the College Media Journal Awards in New York City. @millsish.bsky.social thanked college radio and the alternative scene, "without which most of the great rock'n'roll of today would never be heard by mortal ears."

On this day in 1983, R.E.M. recorded 23 demos with sometime producer of Neil Young, Elliot Mazer. The band enjoyed the session so much that they invited Mazer to work with Mitch Easter and Don Dixon on its new album, but it was later agreed that having three producers might do more harm than good.

On this day in 1982, the band played Tupelo’s Tavern in New Orleans. “Alex Chilton [of Big Star] was the janitor there and he went in our dressing room, drank every single beer that was there while we were on stage, and then insulted us afterwards,” Peter explained to David Cavanagh in 1994.

On this day in 1997, three weeks after Bill Berry broke the news of his decision to retire from music to his closest friends, MTV were informed and duly dispatched a camera crew to R.E.M. HQ, where the rest of the band join the drummer for their last television interview as an active foursome.
