Great night at The Conduit Club bringing together companies, unions and charities to discuss why lifting the work ban for people seeking asylum benefits everyone. Thanks to our hosts and panel.

Do deterrence policies stop people from fleeing? The Rwanda policy, Bibby Stockholm, ban on work and countless others show they do not. People leave because they have no choice.

🧵: The Government’s dehumanising new asylum proposals – what are they, and why it matters.

It's worth us saying, none of these plans are in force yet. They require new rules or legislation. And in many areas, the details are still unclear.

Migration is both wonderful and life-saving.

Solidarity to everyone feeling dehumanised, tired and anxious about the future thanks to yet more racist measures that have been announced by the government today.

Our statement on the government’s abhorrent plans for people seeking safety.

Politicians are dividing communities, when they could be building affordable homes and strengthening them.

We’re expecting a barrage of attacks on refugee rights today. Many as grim as this. A week before a budget.

Snatching jewellery from refugees won't make housing affordable, reduce NHS waiting times or fix the UK's real problems. But it’s a great distraction 👀

While headlines focus on how many people claim asylum in the UK, there's one number that's not even officially counted:

The number of people who die while trying to seek sanctuary here.

We know our policies kill people. Their deaths must not be ignored.

Leaving the ECHR would not fix the asylum backlog or stop dangerous Channel crossings. We've joined nearly 300 organisations, with the Save Our Human Rights Act (HRA) Coalition to defend the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).🤝

Hey Keir Starmer, get the memo?

We’ve delivered thousands of messages to Number 10 from our supporters, with the help of some digi-vans!

People are fed up with politicians choosing failed policies and scapegoating over investing in all communities. Time for real change.

Less than 24hrs after a damning Home Affairs report condemned military sites for asylum housing, Labour announces two more.

Wethersfield must close. Napier must close. Cameron and Crowborough must not open.

People seeking safety belong in communities, not camps.

This plan for housing is:

- Better for people seeking asylum
- Better for wider communities
- Cheaper for the taxpayer

Let’s use public money to buy quality homes for all people in our communities – not to fill the pockets of the mega wealthy.

Britain's asylum hotels problem - and the bold idea to solve it
Instead of using private contractors to provide hotel rooms to asylum seekers, could paying councils to buy more properties be the solution?

In reality? We got a barrage of harmful rhetoric about people seeking safety, cruel policies about tearing families apart and discriminatory plans to make people "earn" safety.

Today feels like a good day to remember that most of us believe in welcome 💜
Here are some of the thousands of messages we've received from supporters recently. We'll be delivering them to Number 10, because it seems the government needs this reminder too.

People like you know that families fleeing war and persecution aren’t to blame for the cost-of-living crisis or overstretched services.

Another heartbreaking yet totally avoidable tragedy.

Our thoughts are with their loved ones and refugee communities everywhere.

Enough. Human beings will continue to die at the border until our government dismantles its hostile environment and creates safe routes.

We’ve got so many real solutions for the new Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, to build an asylum system that works for refugees and communities.

Instead of repeating the last Government’s mistakes, we’d love her to sit down with us and hear them.

Our leaders could treat people with dignity, house them safely and let them rebuild.

But they seem to be in a race to the bottom, competing over who can treat people seeking safety the most cruelly.

This emboldens the far-right and leads to racist attacks.

We’re joining 200+ orgs to say enough.

These racist actions do not have broad public support.
Yet the government and the media are fuelling them with hateful and divisive rhetoric.

It's time to take responsibility and change the tune.
