For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

ICE and AI both: "effective disruption of facial recognition can be achieved without triggering the visibility issues inherent to overt disguises."
"masks are very reliable ... However, gait recognition is becoming quite powerful, and it’s also unclear if this will supplant face recognition."

Yeah folks should be wearing that face recognition disruptive makeup.
Held: Many of the ICE agents that drive by have their phones up to the window..I don’t know why, but part of the lawsuit you alluded to earlier alleges that ICE is using an app that can take a picture of a face, identify it, and store it for 15 years.

Trump's DHS has shot 11 people during immigration enforcement operations since September
The ICE and Border Patrol shootings show a pattern that policing experts say is alarming: officers firing into cars and injuring and killing drivers.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

So, who has "President shuts down all communications with MN by invoking the Insurrection Act, followed by 47 USC 606(d)" on their 2026 bingo card? Or even "President takes over all wireless carriers under 606(a)?"
Somehow, I suspect Starlink is not gonna save us from that.

Several years ago, there was an app that would send phone video direct to a civil-rights organization in case your phone was seized or stomped.
Clearly there is renewed need for this. Has anyone heard of something similar?

"Everyone knows that ICE shot and killed a woman here on Wednesday. But that’s not the only thing that’s going on:

- ICE agents are cruising areas with immigrant-owned businesses, and kidnapping patrons and employees alike.

Alas: store was out of Mint-flavored Thin Oreos, so I bought the regular mint Oreos and they are terrible.

Much less mint flavoring per volume of frosting/filling. Impression: minty lard.

Actual lard would be more flavorful than the palm & soy oil on the label.

(Didn't have Mystic Mints either.)
