I’ve been a bit quiet these past few days, reflecting on game development. I absolutely love it—it’s challenging and frustrating, no doubt. The two main offenders? Time and money (I know, shocking, right?). But it hasn’t been all bad; I’ve met a lot of cool people along the way.

Almost there! We finally completed the level and implemented the grid system and timeline. We’re planning to do a dev log soon to explain the battle system in more detail, but this is a great first step."

I Want To Make An MMO Said The Kid:

I know we’ve all heard this come out of a young person’s mouth. Maybe some of us have even been at this phase—I know I have. I’m not here to shut down anyone’s dreams, because I’m not a dream killer. But I will say this: slow down. Game dev is a big undertaking.

From Concept to Realization:

We finally completed the level design for the demo! This demo will showcase our battle system, which was by far the hardest part to code. We still need to add the toon shader and a few VFX.

Memory Lane: Looking Back A Year

These are some of our early concept work from when we started this project a year ago. It’s for our bird-like people, known as the Wingari.

To Promote Or Not To Promote

Self-promotion is a necessary part of the process. If you don’t share, no one will ever see your work. But it’s a fine line—a very fine line. Overdo it, and you risk coming across as arrogant, which can kill any interest in your work. So... how do we self-promote?

Narrative vs. Gameplay

Is gameplay more important than narrative? Does every part of the story need to fit gameplay? Harmonizing them is tricky, but when one overshadows the other, the experience falters. A game with imbalance feels like a dull sword—it swings, but it never truly strikes.

The first video game to feature motion-captured animation was Prince of Persia (1989). Developer Jordan Mechner used rotoscoping by filming his younger brother performing the character's movements, then tracing over the footage to create the game's smooth and realistic animations.

Character Showcase: Nasir The Thugish Mage

Nasir is the Magnus of our main hero team. A Wingari born and raised on the streets, he taught himself to wield the Omni Pulse after the tragic loss of a dear friend. His journey is one of revenge... and epic manly karaoke!

What Makes A Game Fun, Really? 🤔

Have you ever thought about this while designing your game? Of course you have (I hope)! Otherwise, you might not be developing your game in the most efficient way. I like to use a simple acronym.

I Won’t Play Your F**ing Game

I once read an article called, "I Won’t Read Your F**ing Script" early in my career, and it really stuck with me. While it came across as a bit aggressive, it put things into perspective for me and has grounded me when pursuing creative endeavors."

Until our demo is complete (hopefully by the new year), I’m starting a series called ‘Our Humble Beginnings.’ I want to share our progress over the last year—so many ups and downs... and downs... and dow...

PS. In the beginning, we used placeholder assets.

Sometimes, game developers hide tiny Easter eggs or jokes in assets that players rarely notice! For example, in Halo 3, certain in-game objects have humorous text written on them, like small labels on crates that say "Property of Master Chief." It’s a fun way for devs to leave their personal touch!
