Hi 🦋!

I'm a marine ecologist and evolutionary biologist fortunate to lead a transatlantic research lab in 🇨🇦🇸🇪🇳🇴 focused on how fishes respond to their environments. We love combining experiments and fieldwork with genomics, tracking, bioacoustics, and deep learning to forecast population responses!
Hey #CSEE2025 #SCEE2025!

We have a whopping SIX presentations from our Transatlantic Fish Lab today! Find us at Marine Ecology 1&2, Macroevolution, and the poster session to learn about adaptation, speciation, and chromosomal inversions in Atlantic cod and bluefin tuna.

New paper!

Social media for fisheries science and management professionals: How to use Bluesky and Instagram, and why you should.

This is the *first* paper in the peer reviewed scientific literature to explain how Bluesky works and how to use it for #SciComm 🧪🦑🐠

On this #TransDayOfVisibility I've been reflecting on how much more fear I have being visibly and loudly trans+ lately (and how afraid my trans siblings and peers are lately)--we now have a local bathroom ban, forced misgendering of students and teachers, etc.

But we're still here, still wonderful
Here is a photo of a trans non-binary biologist (me) holding a bird (Eastern Towhee) that is likely a bilateral gynandromorph-- a fusion of cells with female-type chromosomes and cells with male-type chromosomes in one bird!

Biological sex and human gender diversity is real and wonderful ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

I like to think if I was turned into a fish, I'd be a sarcastic fringehead, but in reality I'd probably be this guy. So for #FishOfTheWeek let's talk about flatfishes. They are much cooler than you think
