Make America Metric Already

Husband to Laura, dad to three kids, project manager, but mostly just a guy trying to figure stuff out.

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

It says something about how far WORLD magazine has fallen that it would publish this misogynistic tripe. Again the long reach of Wilson’s psychotic legalism cannot be underestimated.

Just filled out a form (consent for a background check in "European countries") that had two date fields on it: one used the DD/MM/YYYY format and the other used the MM/DD/YYYY format.

These fields were only 2.54cm from each other.

It never occurred to me before now to see if the Beatles had any Christmas albums. They had seven!

None of them are on Apple Music, but the album '12 Greatest Carols' by a cover band calling themselves The Butties is. 😝

“biblical” ≠ Christlike

In fact, “biblical” is often a slippery term.

About as useful as “librarical”

Just got Immich set up and was scrolling through old photos. Found this one from 2010 when we were cleaning out my parents' basement.

Playskool Pipeworks were amazing and we played with them for years.

A single red corner connector looks like it's going for $12 on eBay now.

I'm slowly becoming convinced that I should be a single-issue YIMBY voter. If a political candidate isn't proposing solutions for how to get stuff built, then I'm not interested.

Oh, and also: the Metric System. Make America Metric Already.
California’s high speed rail system is not delayed because Elon promised shiny new tech.

California High Speed Rail is delayed because we decided to spend 16 years doing environmental studies instead of just exempting it from CEQA and because they bungled the land acquisition process.
We’ve had viable solutions for mobility both within & between cities for a long time, like high-speed rail, prioritized public transit and networks of protected bike-lanes. We need leadership. And we need to stop letting “shiny new tech” distract us from implementing them. Image via UrbanThoughts11

Saw a tweet this morning that's had me spiraling all day.

Context: A 54yo Afghan man had bought a 9yo girl for a couple thousand dollars. (She was later rescued.)

The evangelical Christian tweet response was, in so many words, "I sure am thankful for God's wrath in moments like these."

Preparing to return my Windows 11 work-issued laptop has left me with only an old HP ProDesk running Ubuntu (Linux) for personal computing and it's... a lot of fun to set up and use.

I haven't run into a situation where I need Windows or MacOS yet, though that event is probably inevitable.
