Editing for @techmeme.com, bad tech takes for my own
I'm all for AI regulation, but idk what to feel realizing the most viable paths right now seem to be a) evangelical parents’ rights groups shifting their targets from TV/comics/games to this newer thing, b) media conglomerates pushing IP lawsuits, c) local NIMBY zoning fights against datacenters

* the chip dies are now being fabricated in Arizona before being shipped back to Taiwan for packaging.

100% of packaging facilities capable of CoWoS-L, which is indispensable for Blackwell's architecture, are still located in Taiwan.

Insanely detailed as a leak. Still wild how Imagination, the legendary GPU company, went under the radar for years while remaining competitive in graphics tech. One day we’ll look back at how the course was changed when IMG being acquired by a Chinese hedge fund instead of any hardware companies
A source details how Google built the Pixel 10's Tensor G5 chip without Samsung's help, using in-house and off-the-shelf IP, and partnering with Arm and others (Kamila Wojciechowska/Android Authority)

My ¢2 on the S25 disappointment:

We knew Qualcomm was charging 20%-30% more for the 8 Elite. Sure it’s an impressive leap in power efficiency (partly due to TSMC N3E), but when Samsung finalized S25's design 12-18 months ago, they prob had to choose between price hikes or minimal hardware upgrades
Samsung announces the $800 Galaxy S25 with a 6.2" screen and the $1K 6.7" Galaxy S25 Plus, with 12GB of RAM, Snapdragon 8 Elite, "Qi2 Ready", and more (Dominic Preston/The Verge)

IT Home: a source told the Economic Observer RedNote has been working overtime since Jan 13 on "optimizations for foreign users". And a job listing for English language moderators

I know I will write about Xiaohongshu/RedNote one day, but I didn’t expect it to be today:

It’s #1 downloaded app in the US today. Why? Because the TikTok ban is pushing users to join another Chinese app out of spite. Also, they call themselves the “TikTok refugees.”

With a TikTok Ban Looming, Users Flee to Chinese App ‘Red Note’
Some say they joined Xiaohongshu, which translates to "little red book," to spite the US government after a ban on TikTok became more likely.

How does Geoff keep doing this?

This year's reveal trailers are sure exciting, but even without them, this might still be the best TGA I've seen. The show feels genuinely sincere to me—acknowledging industry struggles like layoffs, creative conflicts, and even criticism of the TGA themselves.

The Windows 11 user experience has become a disaster at this point. Can't wait for a universal SteamOS to take off, being able to run on any gaming PCs so I can finally ditch Microsoft for good
Microsoft wants to make the Xbox app the home of PC gaming. Hundreds more games are now appearing in the Xbox app as Microsoft looks to bring even more PC games to its ecosystem. I think this is the start of interesting changes for the Xbox app in 2025. Details 👇 www.theverge.com/2024/12/11/2...

Stock Android's animations do heavy liftings for the Pixel's "smooth feel," but charging flagship prices for a 2022 chip is unacceptable. Meanwhile Huawei achieved better energy efficiency with its 9020 despite using SMIC's 7nm node. Who really got sanctioned here?

Know a few people who would absolutely love this... just mad curious how they managed to source the display panel for such a low volume gadget. Website is listing 2K OLED, could be the same supplier as the actual MacBook Touch Bar (2170 x 60)?
