Remember yesterday's #wordfact ? Did anyone notice anything peculiar with the numbers? Many ancient populations actually counted to base-20 instead of 10! Vigesimal numeral systems were popular in ancient times, and you can still find traces in modern langauges like French and Dutch - even English!

Did you know there is a linguistics explanation for why the "Asians are good at Math" trope might be true? Research has shown that the language you were taught ti count in might affect how you think about - and thus work with - numbers.

Did you know that what a language calls "Tea" tells you something about the population's ancient trade routes with China? Both "tea" and "cha" stem from the root character "茶" in mandarin chinese, but different dialects say it differently.

Some languages tend toward the obvious when it comes to naming things. Take for example, in Swedish, an octopus is known as "bläckfisk" , where "bläck" = ink, "fisk" = fish. So Octopus = ink fish. Other examples include Riverhorse (hippopotamus), Beak Animal (platypus) and Latewalker (sloth).

Did you know that your salary is a measure of how much salt you are worth? "Salary" comes from the Latin word "salārium" which means "salt money". In ancient Rome, soldiers were sometimes paid in salt - which was a valuable commodity due to it's ability to preserved food.

Did you know that the Ampersand - & - used to be the 27th Letter of the Alphabet, and is so named because it wass supposed to be said as "et per se et" (latin) or "and per se and " (english) ... but kids being kids mumbled and sped through it... giving the Symbol the name - Ampersand.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest surviving - and found! - piece of literary work known to date was composed 4,000 years ago in Mespotamia! And we only figured out what was written on the clay tablets in the 1870s!

I do wonder it there are even older pieces we haven't found?
