Sometimes the meaning of words change pretty drastically overtime. Take for example "nice" - which originated from the Latin word "Nescuis" - meaning foolish, ignorant or "not knowing" and from Old French "Nice" - which means careless, clumsy, weak , poor. (late 13th century)

Some languages tend toward the obvious when it comes to naming things. Take for example, in Swedish, an octopus is known as "bläckfisk" , where "bläck" = ink, "fisk" = fish. So Octopus = ink fish. Other examples include Riverhorse (hippopotamus), Beak Animal (platypus) and Latewalker (sloth).

Did you know that the Ampersand - & - used to be the 27th Letter of the Alphabet, and is so named because it wass supposed to be said as "et per se et" (latin) or "and per se and " (english) ... but kids being kids mumbled and sped through it... giving the Symbol the name - Ampersand.
