It must feel great to be a bus driver and to get to righteously and loudly honk at people blocking the bus stop.

The legendary @frankfukuyama.bsky.social will be joining us at this year’s New Liberal Action Summit!
He’ll be joining us for a discussion on the future of the center-left, at a time when liberal democracy is under threat from the populist right in every corner of the globe.

Locking in with Zubin Gell is out! We dive into the brutal reality of job searching, grad school as a default option, finding competence through work, wrestling with faith and authenticity, and why most young men today aren't actually "locking in", they're completely "locked out.”

I'm extremely disappointed in this "balanced" plan. This policy would kill a ton of housing where it is needed most, with nothing concrete to make up for it.
Strap in folks, because I have a lot of thoughts that have been brewing over the last few weeks🧵

It’s no secret: The housing crisis is real.
We must build more homes to stay ahead, ensuring affordability and housing options instead of growth in new areas that will drive up costs.

Those who scream the loudest about how "this is so undemocratic" are often those the least interested in the actual will of the people.

It's crazy how the average Toronto intersection is like
30 pedestrians
6 cyclists
2 cars
1 guy doing a 3 point turn
But is designed like
Tiny sidewalk
No bike lane

Holy shit they are delaying the (very simple) redesign of a tiny part of Yonge Street until 2030!!!

Another quick blog post. 7-8plexes in Edmonton are overwhelmingly being built near LRT stations. A blanket curtailing of the 8 unit maximum would mean fewer people able to live a short walk, bike ride or bus ride away from mass transit.

It's also a negative cycle. We'll be told more support is needed in the suburbs at a time those councillors indicated they'll ignore us.
Anyway, look at the surveys, letters, in-person consultation attendees and deputations. Suburban ward housing advocates showed up; the mayor didn't show up for us.

Perks isn't voting yes with strong mayor powers.
A bigger issue for me is multiple councillors (Carroll, Fletcher) used questions and speeches to state that residents associations were saying no, dismissing those saying yes as just from downtown. And the mayor said nothing to correct that.

The most flagrant lie that has been told this week is that Olivia Chow's hands were tied, and that she had to compromise.
I explain why that is not the case, and why the bare-faced conclusion is simple:

It's wild how we discuss FAR using these examples when the minimum FAR should realistically be something like 200.

That's right. We need apartments of all sizes in the places people want to live and the policies to get them built.
That means keeping ground-oriented housing like 8-plexes legal in Edmonton. #yegcc #yeg

Yes, 5 bedroom apartments exist. And yes, we can make more. If we as a city decide we want them, developers will build them.

Canadian cities need way more hotels. Prices are very high, which not only prevents people from traveling domestically which is terrible, but drags on the tourist economy and on the housing market!
