Our findings have important impacts for French and EU policymakers trying to reduce pesticide use: climate change makes further reductions even harder. 🌍 #Pesticide #ClimateChange #GreenDeal

Using our estimates, our simulations show that, ceteris paribus, French farmers would increase pesticide use by +7% to +15% by 2050 under the RCP4.5 climate change scenario. 📈🌱 #PesticideProjection

Pesticide use is more sensitive to weather in the case of those with higher risks 📈 to human health in the case of herbicides and fungicides and for those with higher risks to the environment in the case of insecticides.

Our estimates likely represent the lower bound estimates of the farmers’ intensive margin responses to weather shocks 🌿🌧️ : They reflect how weather affects pests, pesticide effectiveness, and yields, but not changes in crop types or overall farming area 🌱 #FarmResponses

Results 📊 : +1% temp ⬆️ = +1.70% fungicides 🍄
+1.72% herbicides ☘️
+0.37% insecticides 🦋
+1% precip ⬆️ = +0.53% fungicides 🍄
+0.25% herbicides ☘️
+0.25% insecticides 🦋

Using an original, exhaustive dataset 📊 of purchases of all active substances in France 🇫🇷, we show that farmers 🧑‍🌾 do adjust their pesticide use to weather shocks ⛈️

I am so happy to share that our paper "Weather shocks and pesticide puchases" with @FBareille and Derya Keles is now published in the European Review of agricultural Economics see our 🧵 ⤵️
