Curious or didn’t make it out for the opening of the Eglinton Crosstown this frigid Sunday morning? Reece did a great job covering all you need to know, from the stations to the trains and the overall experience.
I woke up at 3:55 this morning to stand in -25 degree weather for two hours and visit every station of the Eglinton Crosstown. This 8000-word essay contains all of my thoughts and a whole lot of photos. The overall takeaway? It's good, but there's things to improve.

OC Transpo says there are currently 20 LRVs available for service, with 39 out of service. Work continues to replace worn CBAs (two axles per day), while other maintenance needs are ongoing. OC Transpo believes 20 available trains is stable for now, hopes to reintroduce more ASAP, no timeline yet.

LRV 1118 is Back in Service!
This appears to be the first train to return after most of the fleet was sidelined due to spalling on the cartridge bearing assemblies. Great job!

Sources indicate that Friday will see a target of 15 single trains operating on O-Train Line 1.
MEMO: OC Transpo has identified a new issue on O-Train Line 1 involving cartridge bearing assemblies (CBAs), where “spalling” (metal flaking inside bearings) has been detected on some trains. As a result, trains with over 100,000 km on these parts are being pulled from service for replacement.

The Cost of Waiting...
Why ‘we’ll fix it later’ is one of the most expensive decisions we make in public infrastructure.
We talk a lot about “value engineering” as responsible cost control.

Too often, it’s really a way to defer decisions and push costs, complexity, and risk into the future.

I wrote about why waiting is rarely neutral in infrastructure, and what it really costs us.

OC Transpo’s Line 1 (Confederation) is updating manual door procedures to improve reliability and comfort. Doors will use manual mode at terminus stations, remain automatic at intermediate stops, and operators must follow strict safety steps during holds and dwell times. 🚈 (as per internal memo).
