Hajime no Ippo is hopeful, and treats the gym and the ring as sacred places where you can better yourself
Ashita no Joe treats the ring as a place where broken men go to burn brightly in their final moments, to at least die feeling like they mattered
and damn if I don't love them both equally

Ashita no Joe is a classic comic. It's not the same kind of boxing manga as Hajime no Ippo. It's from an era before that. Very different. Very good. Seedy settings, great characters, and fantastic art from Tetsuya Chiba.
