it's easy to mistake a guideline for a principle. should never betray a principle, applied consistently and universally, but to never betray a guideline means you don't understand it

I still think google+ circles was onto something but the ux of managing an identity directory is too cumbersome when a person is just in the mindset of getting something done

suspect people who disagree with this are stuck in a myspace top 8 mentality with how they manage their graph and are comfortable having no documented relation to identities they know and quasi follow but could be app-specific useful if it were documented
the idea of a singular universal “following” list is misguided — if you’re fixated on this, your brain is still too conditioned and attached to the dying era of traditional social media
where we’re going we don’t need “following” and “followers”
“should my atproto app re-use Bluesky’s follow/profile lexicons?”
my 2 cents: in your onboarding flow, let users choose to “connect” an existing social graph & set it as the default, or start fresh w/ a new social graph
like feeds, users should be able to choose their social graph & use multiple

obviously they also confuse their own regular selves with the polished production of bully podcasters they listen to and they'd be put down the same if they ever stepped outside with the "wrong" politics

they'll hone in on how it's corny or unpolished or amateur or whatever but otherwise harmless. like they're confusing "able to be ridiculed by internet bullies" with "corrupting influences that must be defeated" and it's just some average person living their life

a woman labeled a terrorist by US law enforcement and the White House is being simultaneously memorialized at NBA games and by major cultural icons. this regime is literally own-goaling itself to death. it’s cooked.

If you’re struggling to understand the creep of fascism, just think about the fact that the “opposition party” is now telling people to hope the same police that brutally murdered a man five years ago and set off the largest protest ever will now save them from an even more murderous police.

there really was a sense a kind of thing had happened, that history had been pinched to not allow a return, and here tf I am behind the world I saw when I was born

to say they don’t care or if there’s support for it is almost missing the point, it’s a sudden shock of conscious sobriety where they admit through facial expressions alone they’re obedient npc’s in someone else’s game and haven’t been programmed to know the answer
