I've worked in pre-school education for over 20 years - travelling quietly alongside children on their learning journeys.
Also love musical / creative pursuits and reading (fantasy & contemporary romance and of course tons of educational non-fiction!).

The way you speak to your child is the way they will learn to speak to others.

And to themself.

This makes me so sad for children today 😭
How did it ever come to this ridiculousness?
Who on earth thought making schools places to be afraid, anxious or tense would help our children succeed?
Schools should be fun, happy places NOT some sort of army barracks. I am disgusted. 😠
Anni wasn’t happy at school. She was crying in the evenings and saying she had tummy aches in the morning.
Her dad went into school for a meeting. 1/

What does being ‘Reception Ready’ really mean?

The Department for Education has recently shared its version of school readiness, including brushing teeth, catching a ball, and being toilet trained.

While life skills matter, Early Years Reviews wanted to reframe the narrative.

Tagging @stephenmorganmp.bsky.social our early years minister who is on here (although like Bridget Phillipson he isn't actually following anyone).
Excellent letter from @eyalliance.bsky.social to the DfE about the impact of their announcements about 'school-based nurseries' on other types of early years settings.

I find myself surprisingly angry about the very poor attitude from the DfE, especially towards over 8,000 early years settings that are *run by parent volunteers*. I've given 16 years of my free time to help to run a preschool and this is the thanks that we get? 🤷‍♀️ @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social

I don't understand this thing of repeatedly saying 'school-based nurseries' when most of the early years sector is in PVI settings. It feels almost like she's against us? 🤷‍♀️

The key focus for EY education and care must *always* be meeting the needs of babies and young children, not saving money or getting people into work. Those can be handy byproducts but they should never be the main thing. Young children can't advocate for themselves so we must do it for them. 1/2 ⬇️

Last week I filled the tuff tray with pieces of marble run. The children couldn’t work out how to make sense of it without a marble just dropping straight down. With no adult intervention and lots of tinkering they got there today. Sometimes showing them prevents opportunities to develop meta skills.

No response yet so have added tags for those who may know or may need to be aware, hope that's ok?

Hi I've tried to follow the #EarlyYearsSky feed but nothing on it seems related to early years in the slightest ☹️
Am I doing something wrong?
