What's the difference?

Immersive art usually means work that surrounds the viewer physically or virtually. When you paint images of these worlds or concepts related to immersivity, the painting itself may not be immersive (with the exception of huge canvases in the style of Monet).

Immersivist art speaks to immersivity found online or in virtual worlds and games, but it highlights other aspects of it. This can be anything from landscape paintings that offer an appreciation of those worlds, or paintings that explore aspects of digital identity and the state of the internet.

Immersive exhibits, in contrast, are just about transporting viewers to another place via clever design. An immersive exhibit can be about anything and are considered immersive because of clever light projections and art pieces that turn the room into something else.

Plays can also be immersive. When a theatrical production is immersive, it's about transporting the audience to another place by literally making them a part of the play. Think murder mystery dinners where the viewer is completely surrounded by the story.

While "immersive" as a design property and "Immersivist" as an art movement might initially be confusing, the difference is easy to understand if you're into gaming. The two are linked due to that common factor.

Immersivism is a love letter to gaming and the internet. ✨

I’m very concerned what social pathway *might* be opened up if the government doesn’t bring accountability to rich and powerful people that did these crimes

I might not *like* the State’s “monopoly on violence”, but as much as I don’t like it, the other alternative chills me to the bone with fear

Dude… we’ve pulled EVERYTHING in our 401(k) out of stocks (especially tech stocks) and into “safe-ish” boring stuff

When this bubble bursts, it’s gonna burst big

I hope we’re wrong, cause a lot people will be hurt by this if and when it does

"Immersive art" as a label does not extend to paintings. This is why painters have developed a new word for work that sits outside of the "immersive" definition. Bryn Oh and I call it "Immersivist".

Here's Bryn on what being an Immersivist means to her. secondlifecat.substack.com/p/cool-cat-o...

This example uses a pushWindow with no visible content to hide the main window while an immersive space is open. The advantage is that the main window reappears in the same place when exiting the space.

I haven’t read the book (obviously) but the irony about heroes is that real heroes aren’t setting out to be heroes, they’re just people trying their best to be kind people whenever possible

Sadly, it’s people who are out seeking to be heroes to glorify themselves that often prove to be villains

MAGA was all about “…the Deep State! the Deep State! the Deep State!”

We all should be so lucky, I wish we had a “Deep State” compared to what we actually have, because this is what an “Absolute State” looks like.

Orb: On The Movements Of The Earth is an amazing anime follow-up to reading The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt. Both deal with questioning accepted dogma under dangerous circumstances.

You can watch "Orb" on Netflix and find The Swerve at most bookstores.
