Designer/producer/business guy at Asymmetric (we make the Loathing series of games). I also write puzzles, take photos, and climb rocks.
LinkedIn trying to lure me into their ecosystem with puzzle games seems like it'd work, except for the fact that they are straight-up lying in their (seemingly constant) emails about it. I don't even *have* 15 colleagues at my company!

Ten years ago today we shipped Firewatch. I say this every anniversary but it feels both like a lifetime ago and like it was yesterday. Thank you everyone who played it back then or played it today for the first time. Thank you to everyone on the team, I’m still so proud of what we made.

I love it when there are half a dozen options in the conversation script and they all just point to the same result node!

Wait, there are people who don't refrigerate their hot sauce?

(Cold hot sauce is just *sauce*, and it goes on everything.)

This game has a daily challenge now, and it's often genuinely tricky. Highly recommend adding it to your list of morning puzzles. (You do have a list of morning puzzles, right?)

I have never seen my pup so happy as the time she found a discarded hamburger bun on the sidewalk and immediately crammed the entire thing in her tiny mouth. Pure bliss.

She's been on the lookout for "street bread" ever since!

Taking our game to conventions (PAX, etc) was how we did it! You get to watch over peoples' shoulders and get 500-1000 players every few months.

I've been running an indie games studio for 15 years now, and it felt like a good time to boil down what I've learned into 4 pieces of advice:

I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.

The one differential with pricing that I'd bring up is that higher prices can eventually (theoretically) capture players who won't pay a premium via discounts. Much harder to do the opposite and get more money from folks who would have been willling to pay more!

Asymmetric has hewn close to this advice for 23 years now. Small team & easy prototyping for sure. Testing for WoL we did mostly at conventions; getting to watch ~1k people play your game every few months was super helpful! Pricing plays out like you said - SOL costs 2x, but we sell half as many.
