I really enjoyed Running Man. It held pretty close to the original book and I was very curious to see how they would end it. The book ended by running a 747 into a skyscraper and that seemed unlikely to be in the movie

I remember my 15 year old self being very distressed at this cliffhanger ending back in 1989. The idea of waiting 3-4 years for another movie to resolve the plot was… a lot.

I’m going to assume that little problem came from not realizing there would be sequels so they wrote a fun ending for the original film

It always bothered me that Doc Brown was so hard core on not knowing or changing your future, but that’s the whole premise that starts the second movie
