What's in a name?
In many Germanic languages, the word for 'debt' also means 'guilt'. Cevat Giray Aksoy et al. find that using a guilt-laden term reduces willingness to borrow, lowers approval for government debt, & influences firms' financing plans and the framing of fiscal policy.
