When I was in grad school, someone (not in my department) told me I wasn't a mathematician because I didn't have a PhD. I think that is too exclusionary -- Richard Guy was a mathematician. But I am not sure I'm OK with it as a self-bestowed title.
There's buzz about Pope Leo XIV having a math degree from Villanova — and we love seeing math in the spotlight!
We asked our own mathematician Sarah Bryant: What makes someone a mathematician?
Now we want to hear from you — share your thoughts below!

I would not die on this hill. They are calling it this for stupid acronym reasons, and they will enjoy the fight. But it would be good to include a note in stories that it is not a real department. Like the Attorney General is not a real general.
My plea to reporters is to not call it the Department of Government Efficiency. It is not a Department. It is almost certainly going to a Federal Advisory Committee, and it is very important that reporters accurately convey that Vivek and Elon are working on an advisory committee.

So "Democracy Dies in Darkness" has shifted from a warning to a plan?
From a retired WashPost editor.
This would be a disgrace.

My pharmacy texted me today to urge me to book a flu shot appointment.
Flu is not circulating at appreciable levels anywhere in the US at the moment, per #CDC's most recent FluView report.
For most people, getting a shot this far in advance of flu season is a waste of a flu shot.
