I've just spent a genuinely uplifting hour chatting about ED&I with our magnificent @prospectunion.bsky.social organiser.

It's one of the things which continues to give me a glimmer (I had to check the spelling twice there) of hope.

👉 Women make up only 22% of the tech workforce and are even less represented in leadership roles.

👉 Fair working hours, genuine choice and strong worker voice are essential if the tech sector is to attract and retain diverse talent.
December 19, 2025 at 10:42 AM
👉 Encouraging more girls into STEM isn't enough if women are later pushed out by unsustainable working practices.

👉 Addressing gender inequality in the tech industry will require more than encouragement or skills pipelines. It demands structural change.
December 19, 2025 at 10:42 AM
3/ Structural change must therefore be at the centre of any serious industrial strategy for tech.

2/ Our research shows that around half of tech workers have been asked to opt out of the Working Time Directive, with 70% saying they cannot achieve a satisfactory work-life balance. These practices disproportionately impact women and contribute to the sector’s ongoing gender imbalance.
December 18, 2025 at 12:46 PM
1/ The government’s new Women in Tech Taskforce is a welcome step but its success will depend on tackling workplace culture, excessive hours and insecure “voluntary” opt-outs from working time protections.

The gender pension gap in the civil service stands at 45%, higher than the UK average of 36.5%. This is unacceptable.

That's why we have written to Cabinet Office Minister Anna Turley to urge the government to take urgent action to address the gap.
